Rejected asylum seekers in the UK could be offered the chance to be sent to the Balkans, under plans being considered by the Labour government to tackle the crisis of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats, the Independent reports.
Migration Watch UK reports that, as of yesterday, more than 5.200 migrants had entered Britain via small boats in 2025.
According to the British government's proposals, the Independent writes, "return centres" abroad would be used to house those whose asylum applications have been rejected.
It would represent a reversal of the Conservatives' failed scheme with Rwanda – under which those who arrived in small boats were given a one-way ticket to that African country, regardless of whether they ultimately qualified for asylum in the UK or not.
According to The Times, which first reported that this plan was being discussed among ministers, Great Britain could approach Albania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia.
The Times, citing sources in the British government, reported that London allegedly intends to pay the countries that receive them for each individual migrant.
