Turkish authorities have arrested nine journalists who were covering overnight protests against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu from several cities, the Turkish Journalists' Union said on Monday.
It is still unclear why the journalists were arrested.
A Turkish court on Sunday ordered the detention of Imamoglu, a main rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, pending trial on corruption charges.
Imamoglu's arrest last week sparked the country's biggest protests in a decade.
Although authorities have banned street protests in many cities, citizens have been holding mostly peaceful protests against the government for five nights in a row.
The main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), called for protests against the court's decision on Imamoglu, calling the decision politically motivated and undemocratic.
The government denies that the investigations are politically motivated and claims that the courts are independent.
Imamoglu rejected the accusations, calling them "incomprehensible accusations and slander" and called for nationwide protests.
Speaking during a demonstration in Istanbul, outside the municipality headquarters, CHP leader Ozgur Ozel said on Sunday that they would continue the protests until Imamoglu was released.
A photographer from France Presse (AFP) is among the arrested journalists, the union said in a post on the X network.
