British Defense Secretary John Healy said today that "the Americans are right" when they say that Europe is not investing enough in its defense.

Haley said this after highly critical statements by officials in the administration of US President Donald Trump.

"The Americans are absolutely right to say that when it comes to defence spending, European security and support for Ukraine, European nations can and will do more, and the UK is leading the way," John Healy told Times radio.

Healy was responding to questions about statements by US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, which were revealed after information was leaked on the encrypted messaging service Signal used by those officials.

The conversation concerned US attacks on Houthi rebels in Yemen.

"If you think it necessary, let's do it. I just hate that we're going to the aid of the Europeans again," Vance wrote to Hegseth.

"I completely agree, I hate the profiteering behavior of Europeans. It's pathetic," Hegseth replied.

The British Defense Minister highlighted the announced increase in the British defense budget to 2,5 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2027 and the efforts of France and the United Kingdom to establish a "coalition of the willing" to ensure the sustainability of a future ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

"We are responding to the American challenge to European nations to do more to support Ukraine. And we are responding to the demands of Ukrainians who say: 'In the context of the ceasefire, what security guarantees do we have that Russia will not attack us again,'" Healy added.

A summit of the "Coalition of the Volunteers" countries will be organized in Paris tomorrow.

However, Russia has already opposed any European military presence in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has demanded an end to Western military support for Kiev as a condition for an end to the fighting.

Healy welcomed the agreement announced by US authorities on Tuesday on a ceasefire in the Black Sea between the Russians and Ukrainians, saying he hoped it would be "a precursor to a broader and more lasting ceasefire."
