The European Union will be ready to retaliate with countermeasures to US tariffs if necessary, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
In a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, she emphasized that the EU's goal is to find a solution through negotiations.
"However, if necessary, we will protect our interests, people and companies," she said.
According to her, the EU does not necessarily want to retaliate, but Brussels has a strong plan for it and will retaliate if necessary.
US President Donald Trump threatened higher tariffs on the European Union and Canada a few days ago if they work together to "cause economic harm to the United States."
The EU first announced the first countermeasures and then postponed them until mid-April, including, for example, 50 percent tariffs on American bourbon.
In response, Trump threatened to impose 200 percent tariffs on all wines and other alcoholic products from the EU if Brussels did so.
