French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said today that nothing justifies American pressure on Denmark over Greenland.
"The borders of Europe are non-negotiable, as is the territorial integrity of NATO countries," Barrot said.
Tensions arose between the US and Denmark after US Vice President J.D. Vance visited a US military base in Greenland, an autonomous province of Denmark, on Friday.
Vance, the right-hand man of US President Donald Trump, has strongly criticized Denmark's alleged inaction in this territory, accusing it of "underinvesting in the security of this incredible and magnificent country."
US pressure on Denmark is "unjustified, especially in terms of security, because we forget to mention that the US had up to 17 military bases in Greenland," said Barro, adding that the US now has only one military base left.
The French minister recalled that on Tuesday he and his Danish counterpart signed a "strategic partnership that confirms the commitment to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Denmark," thanks to which bilateral relations will be strengthened, especially in the field of defense.
The agreement was signed during a two-day state visit by Danish King Frederick X and his wife Mary to France, which ends today.
