French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Russia's new deadly attacks in Ukraine and called for "strong action" if Moscow continues to "refuse peace."
"These Russian attacks must stop. A ceasefire is needed as soon as possible. And strong action if Russia continues to seek to gain time and reject peace," Macron wrote on the social network X, without specifying what action would be involved.
The Europeans could impose additional sanctions to maintain pressure on Russia and encourage it to begin peace negotiations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that the number of Russian air strikes on his country is "increasing" and that pressure on Russia remains insufficient.
Ukraine in particular is demanding greater economic sanctions, which Russia is trying to ease.
"While Ukraine accepted President (US Donald) Trump's proposal for a complete and unconditional ceasefire for 30 days almost a month ago and we are working with all our partners on ways to ensure peace, Russia continues the war with new intensity, paying no attention to civilians," Macron said.
"How long will Russia ignore the peace steps of the US and Ukraine and continue to kill children and civilians?" added the French president.
