Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that his army has captured Chinese soldiers, whom he claims were fighting for the Russian army, in eastern Ukraine for the first time.
"Our military has captured two Chinese citizens who were fighting with the Russian army against Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk region, in the east," Zelensky said on social media.
"We have information that there are many more Chinese citizens in the occupation units besides these two," the Ukrainian president added.
Zelensky also wrote that he had asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately contact Beijing and demand an explanation, adding that Western countries should also react.
"There absolutely must be a reaction to this. A reaction from the US, Europe and all those in the world who want peace in Ukraine," Zelensky said.
According to him, China's involvement in this war in Europe, directly or indirectly, is a clear signal that Russian President Vladimir Putin "will do everything but end the war."
"Putin is looking for ways to continue the fight," the Ukrainian president said.
Zelensky released a short video clip of one of the captured Chinese soldiers. The video shows a young man in a suit, with Asian features, with his hands tied.
