Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused US Vice President J.D. Vance of "somehow justifying" Russia's invasion of Ukraine, his most critical comment about a top American politician since their heated exchange in the Oval Office in February.
Speaking to the American news program 60 Minutes, Zelensky said that some officials in the US government have fallen victim to Russian disinformation and are pushing an "altered reality" about which side started the war, Politiko reports.
"Unfortunately, I believe that Russian narratives are prevalent in the U.S.," he said, according to a translation of his remarks to CBS.
"This speaks to the enormous influence of Russian information policy on America, on American politics and American politicians," he added.
Zelensky singled out Vance, accusing him of "somehow justifying Putin's actions."
"I tried to explain: 'You can't look for something in the middle. There is an aggressor and there is a victim. The Russians are the aggressor and we are the victim,'" he added, referring to their tense conversation at the White House in February.
