NATO chief Mark Rutte said today during a surprise visit to Ukraine that talks led by Donald Trump to reach a ceasefire in that country are "not easy", and described Russian attacks on civilians in Ukraine as "scandalous" and "horrific".
"These talks are not easy, especially after this terrible violence," Rutte said today during an unannounced visit to the port city of Odessa, speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Rutte said that NATO supports "all efforts by President (US Donald) Trump in support of peace" and described Russia's "systematic" attacks as "scandalous" and "horrible".
He made the statement two days after a double Russian attack that killed at least 35 civilians in the city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine.
President Zelensky stressed that his country "desperately needs" air defense systems. He also expressed his desire for the "quick and efficient" preparation of a Western military contingent for Ukraine.
