Pope Francis was buried in his favorite church in Rome, after a mass held in St. Peter's Square, the Vatican announced.
The Argentine head of the Roman Catholic Church, who died on Monday at the age of 89, was laid to rest during a 30-minute funeral ceremony that began at 13 p.m. at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in the Italian capital.
At least 400.000 people attended the pope's funeral at the Vatican and along the streets of Rome, Italy's interior minister said, up from an earlier estimate of 250.000.
"We estimate that there were no less than 400.000 people, counting those who were in St. Peter's Square and those along the route," Matteo Piantedozi told the TG5 news program, according to Agence France-Presse.
