The conclave to elect a new pope will begin on May 7, Reuters reported, citing a Vatican source.
The date was reportedly agreed upon during a closed-door meeting of cardinals at the Vatican, the first since the funeral of Pope Francis. An official announcement is expected soon.
About 135 cardinals, all under the age of 80 and from different parts of the world, have the right to participate in the conclave and decide who will be the new head of the church, which has 1,4 billion members.
The previous two conclaves, held in 2005 and 2013, lasted only two days.
