The European Union (EU) has officially joined the call by the United States, Ukraine and other international partners for a complete and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine for at least 30 days.
This is stated in a statement by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
"The EU remains steadfast in its commitment to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine, based on the principles of the UN Charter and international law, and welcomes all efforts to achieve such a peace," the statement said.
Kallas stressed that a pause in hostilities could be a key step towards reducing "civilian suffering and allowing space for meaningful negotiations to end the aggressive war," N1 reports.
According to her, Russia must now demonstrate its desire to achieve peace.
Support was also provided by partner countries that are not EU members, but participated in the informal meeting of foreign ministers in Lviv on May 9 - Moldova, North Macedonia, Norway, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
The meeting participants expressed solidarity with Ukraine and adopted the Lviv Declaration, which supports the establishment of a Special Court to prosecute war crimes in Ukraine.
