The far-right candidate in the presidential elections in Romania, Gheorghe Simion, admitted defeat late last night in the second round of the elections, which was won by the pro-European candidate, Bucharest Mayor Nicosor Dan.
"He (Dan) won the elections, the Romanian people expressed their will," said Simion, who promised to "continue the fight."
Simion, leader of the far-right AUR party, who declared victory immediately after the first election results were announced last night, won around 46 percent of the vote.
After more than 90 percent of the votes were counted, the pro-European mayor of Bucharest, centrist candidate Dan, received almost 54 percent of the vote.
Simion won the first round held on May 4, opposes further aid to Ukraine, is critical of the leadership of the European Union (EU), and advocates conservative policies and close ties to United States President (US) Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement.
