The Belgian royal palace announced today that Princess Elisabeth, who is first in line to the throne, is waiting to find out whether she can return to her second year of studies at Harvard University in the US after US President Donald Trump announced a ban on foreign students from enrolling at the university.
The Trump administration on Thursday revoked Harvard University's ability to enroll foreign students, saying thousands of students must transfer to other colleges or leave the United States.
The head of communications for the Royal Palace of Belgium, Xavier Bert, said that Princess Elisabeth (23) has completed her first year of graduate studies at Harvard and will spend the summer in Belgium, and "we will have to see what happens next year."
The princess is the first of four children of King Philip and Queen Mathilde and is studying for a master's degree in public policy. Last year, she graduated with a degree in history and politics from Lincoln College, Oxford, UK.
Harvard, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has 6.800 international students, more than a quarter of its student body. Most are graduate students from more than 100 countries.
The university filed a lawsuit in federal court in Boston today, alleging that the Trump administration is violating the First Amendment to the US Constitution and that it will have "immediate and devastating consequences for Harvard and more than 7.000 US student visa holders."
