Germany has promised Ukraine joint production of long-range missiles.
The decision was announced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday in Berlin.
Defense Ministers Boris Pistorius and Rustem Umyerov are to sign the corresponding declaration of intent.
"We want to provide (Ukraine) with long-range weapons. We also want to enable joint production," Merck said. "We will make a special effort to equip the Ukrainian army with all the capabilities to successfully defend its country," the chancellor added.
Merc did not talk about the German Taurus cruise missiles, the delivery of which Ukraine has been seeking for some time.
Zelensky said that now it is about financing projects that are already underway in Ukraine. Merc explained that cooperation can be implemented in both Ukraine and Germany.
"But we reckon that Russia's refusal to negotiate and its failure to respect the ceasefire is now really having its consequences," the chancellor said.
After more than three years of war, Ukraine still lacks long-range weapons with high destructive power to strike Russian military targets and logistical routes far behind the front lines.
Although the UK and France have supplied their Storm Shadow and Scalp cruise missiles, and the United States later added ATACMS artillery missiles, they are few in number. There were restrictions on their use, although these restrictions were later relaxed.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has begun building its own missiles.
The Ukrainian weapon with the most destructive power to date is the R-360 Neptun anti-ship missile, which destroyed the Russian ship Moskva in the Black Sea in 2022.
Zelensky said in March that an improved version of the Neptun, called Neptun-MD, has a range of 1.000 kilometers.
According to data from the Ministry of Defense last year, serial production is already underway. The cruise missile is now also being used against land targets.
In March, a Neptun missile hit a refinery in the Russian city of Tuapse on the Black Sea.
In addition, Ukraine has its own Grom-2 missile. With an extended range of 450 kilometers, it is slightly weaker than the Taurus. The Korshun missile and other weapons with different ranges are still in development.
With rapid technological advances, Ukraine has improved its drones, some of which can now reach targets in Russia at distances of up to 2.000 kilometers.
