The man (31) who hit a French gendarmerie vehicle on the Champs Elysees in Paris with his car today had been a member of the "radical Islamic movement" since 2015 and was proud of it, said sources close to the investigation.
According to the same sources, the attacker and his family were Salafists.
After the collision, the attacker's vehicle caught fire and then exploded.
He died from his injuries while there were no injuries among the police officers.
A Kalashnikov, pistols and smoke bombs were later found in the car.
The police announced that the attacker was not previously known to the security authorities.
French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb previously confirmed that the assailant was dead, and unnamed police sources also stated then that the assailant had ties to extremism.
An earlier statement stated that the driver was armed.
Police have launched an investigation, and it is believed to be an assault due to the weapons found in the vehicle.
