Russia carried out another major airstrike on targets across Ukraine early this morning, killing at least five people and leaving a maternity hospital in the city of Odessa in ruins.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for "concrete action" and "not world silence" to end the war that has lasted more than three years.
Officials in Odessa said two people were killed in the southern port city, where attacks by at least ten Russian drones damaged a blood transfusion center, a maternity ward and an emergency medical building.
In the Donetsk region, officials said at least three people were killed and eight were injured in attacks that damaged several houses and apartment buildings.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia fired 315 drones across the country, downing 277. It also said all seven missiles launched by Russia were shot down.
Moscow said it was revenge for recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory.
The attacks came after Ukrainian forces carried out a covert drone attack dubbed "Operation Cobweb" on Russian military bases deep inside Russia on June 1.
"It is crucial that the response to this and similar Russian attacks is not silence from the world, but concrete action," Zelensky said on social media.
"The action of America, which has the power to force Russia to peace. The action of Europe, which has no alternative but to be strong. The action of others around the world who have called for diplomacy and an end to the war, which Russia has ignored. There must be strong pressure in the name of peace," Zelensky said.
Ukraine depends on continued military aid from its Western allies, but uncertainty over US policy toward the war has raised questions about how much support Kiev can expect to defend itself against Russia.
Peace negotiations between the two sides have not led to any significant progress so far.
Two recent rounds of direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul have yielded progress on a major prisoner exchange, but no progress has been made towards establishing a ceasefire and ending the war.
The major Russian airstrikes also come in the context of renewed fighting by Moscow's forces on the eastern and northeastern parts of the front line, which Zelensky described as a "very difficult" situation.
One of the results of the peace negotiations was the mass exchange of prisoners.
The two sides exchanged buses of prisoners of war on June 9th, in an operation expected to last several days and involve hundreds of prisoners from both sides of the border.
