A combined Russian missile and drone attack on Kiev overnight killed at least 14 people and wounded 44, Ukrainian officials said, Beta news agency reported. The head of the Kiev Military Administration, Timur Tkachenko, said 14 people were killed in the attack, which hit an apartment building and destroyed dozens of apartments.
Emergency services are at the scene of the attack, rescuing people from under the rubble. The Ukrainian emergency services reported that 44 people were injured.
The latest in a series of major Russian drone and missile attacks on Kiev came as world leaders gathered for the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also scheduled to attend.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko told reporters that one American citizen died in the attack from shrapnel injuries.
Explosions were heard for hours throughout the night. Thirty apartments were destroyed in one apartment block, Klimenko said.
There are wounded people in the Svyatoshynskyi and Solomyanskyi neighborhoods, and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that fires broke out in two other Kyiv neighborhoods caused by debris from drones shot down by Ukrainian air defenses.
Russia has launched a record number of drone and missile attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks. Moscow escalated the attacks in response to a Ukrainian audacious operation targeting warplanes at air bases deep inside Russian territory.
The G7 summit - the US, Canada, the UK, Italy, France, Germany, Japan - began in Canada yesterday and was due to continue today, but US President Donald Trump abruptly left the gathering last night due to rising tensions in the Middle East.
Canada, which took over the G7 presidency this year, invited Zelensky to the summit, where he is expected to hold bilateral meetings with world leaders. Zelensky was also scheduled to meet with Trump.
Reuters previously reported that Klimenko said that 14 people were killed and 44 injured in the Russian attack on Kiev overnight.
Klimenko said via the Telegram messaging app that residential buildings, educational institutions and critical infrastructure facilities were damaged in the attack.
Reuters previously reported that city officials said several Russian drones and missiles hit neighborhoods across the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, early this morning.
Reuters witnesses said drones were flying over the Ukrainian capital and they heard what sounded like missiles overhead.
The airstrike warning remained in effect for more than seven hours after it was declared.
Other parts of the country have also been attacked, including areas outside the capital and the southeastern city of Zaporozhye, where the regional governor reported at least four attacks.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko earlier said on Telegram that most of the 16 injured were in the Solomyansky district, near the city center, where the drone damaged the top floor of an apartment building and other non-residential premises.
Timur Tkachenko, head of the military administration of Kiev, recorded 12 attacks in five districts. Among the targets was a kindergarten on the eastern outskirts of the city.
"The capital is under combined attack. The Russians are deploying missiles and drones for attacks. There are fires in different districts, and emergency response teams are on the ground," Tkachenko wrote.
He also said that drones attacked the Solomjansky district.
"This is a very difficult night," he wrote, adding that there were power outages in some areas.
