French President Emmanuel Macron said today in The Hague that it is "absurd" to wage a trade war among NATO members.
He told reporters after an alliance summit during which European leaders tried to accommodate US President Donald Trump's demands that "we cannot say among allies that we need to spend more" on defence, "and then have a trade war within NATO - that is absurd."
Macron added that a collective effort, especially by Europeans, "clearly requires trade peace," which means "the lowering of all existing or reinforced tariff barriers."

The French president assessed that this should be the rule among all allies, stating that the European Union should conclude an agreement with the US.
Macron said he raised the issue on several occasions with Trump and again publicly in front of everyone, during the summit.
He added that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also said this during the summit in The Hague.
