The European Union (EU) announced today that it has imposed sanctions against seven individuals and one group linked to Moscow, accused of trying to destabilize Moldova ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for September.

EU foreign ministers decided to impose these measures, including asset freezes and travel bans, during a meeting in Brussels.

The EU targeted seven individuals linked to fugitive pro-Russian oligarch and politician Ilan Shor, who has also been under EU sanctions since April 2023.

Sanctions were also imposed against A7, a company linked to Russia that the EU has linked to attempts to influence the presidential election and the referendum on EU membership in 2024.

"Moldova is now preparing for parliamentary elections coming this autumn," and will be "a prime target of Moscow's hybrid warfare," EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kalas said today.

According to her, the EU is determined to protect Moldova's democratic process from any external interference.
