The Netherlands has announced that it will contribute 500 million euros to the purchase of US military equipment for Ukraine, becoming the first NATO member country to join a new mechanism for supplying Kiev with US weapons.
Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said on the X network on Monday that the package would include parts and missiles for the Patriot system, the Guardian reports.
NATO Secretary General and former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, welcomed the announcement and said he encouraged other Alliance members to join the new mechanism, called the "NATO Initiative for Prioritized Needs of Ukraine" (PURL).
"This is about urgently providing Ukraine with the equipment it needs to defend itself against Russian aggression," Rutte said, adding that he expects "significant announcements from other allies soon."
President Donald Trump said last month that the United States would provide weapons to Ukraine, paid for by European allies, but he did not provide details on how that would work.
