Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu (95), long celebrated as the father of the Romanian nation but also accused of being responsible for the country's chaotic transition from communism to democracy, died today, the Romanian government announced.
"It is with deep regret that the government announces the death of the former President of Romania, Ion Iliescu. The former president passed away today, August 5, 2025," the statement said.
The government added that details of the organization of a funeral with state honors will be announced in the coming days.
