Kallas: Western countries have 30 days to find diplomatic solution to Iran nuclear crisis

Western countries now have 30 days to find a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis, European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kalas said today, Beta news agency reports.

"We are entering a new phase of 30 days, which we really need to use to find diplomatic solutions," Kallas said before the start of an EU meeting in Copenhagen, a day after Europeans decided to trigger a mechanism that will reimpose international sanctions against Iran within a month.

The request will be considered by the United Nations (UN) Security Council today.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said yesterday that Iran is ready to resume "honest" negotiations over its disputed nuclear program if the West shows goodwill, Reuters reports.

Araqchi made the remarks hours after three European powers launched a process to reimpose UN sanctions on Tehran.

"Araqchi reaffirmed Iran's readiness to continue fair and balanced diplomatic negotiations, provided that the other parties show seriousness and goodwill and avoid moves that harm the chances of success," he said in a letter to Kallas, according to Reuters.
