The Kremlin said it assumes US President Donald Trump remains committed to working towards peace in Ukraine, after the American leader abruptly shifted his rhetoric in favour of Kiev earlier this week.
Trump said on Tuesday, after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, that he believes Kiev can reclaim all of its land seized by Russia - which currently controls about a fifth of the territory - and that it should act now, as Moscow faces economic problems.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow is assuming that the Donald Trump administration still has the political will to find a solution to the war, and that Russia is ready to enter into peace negotiations, Reuters reports.
Peskov also said that Russia supports Trump's call for a comprehensive global ban on biological weapons.
In a speech to the United Nations on Tuesday, Trump said he was “calling on every nation to join us in ending the development of biological weapons once and for all.” He suggested using artificial intelligence to verify compliance with the ban.
Peskov said Russia welcomed Trump's "very important invitation," describing it as a brilliant initiative, Reuters reports.
"Naturally, the Russian side is ready to participate in such a process of renunciation, a general renunciation of biological weapons, and, of course, it would be good if this were to be formalized in some way, again at the international level," he said.
