Three carabinieri were killed and 13 others were injured in a suspected arson attack on a house near Verona, authorities there said this morning.
Two people were detained after the explosion in the town of Castel d'Acano, while a third suspect in the incident fled, police said.
"While our carabinieri were executing a court order, they were hit by a deliberate explosion of a fuel tank," Claudio Pagano, commander of the police unit in Verona, told Italian television station Sky TG24.
The two-story farmhouse was filled with fuel and the explosion occurred when authorities opened the door, regional governor Luca Zaja told the same television station.
It was the second time authorities have tried to evict the siblings from their home in Castel d'Acan, who had occupied the abandoned property about a year ago. They had previously threatened to blow up the house, Zaja claims.
