Thieves who carried out a daylight robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday took jewelry with an estimated value of 88 million euros, Paris public prosecutor Laura Beko said.
"It is important to keep in mind that this damage is material and economic, but it is nothing compared to the historical damage caused by this crime," Beko told RTL radio.
In an incident that some French politicians called a "national humiliation," four people used a crane to climb to a window on the museum's first floor and broke into the gallery of royal jewels on Sunday, before fleeing on motorcycles.
Among the eight stolen pieces of jewelry were the crown and earrings of Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense from the early 19th century.
Empress Eugenie's crown was found in front of the museum, after it fell out during her escape.
