Hungary is starting to implement a new system for entering the Schengen area at the Tompa-Kelebija border crossing today.
The implementation of the new European Union Entry/Exit System (EES) at Hungarian-Serbian border crossings begins today at 8:00 a.m. at the Tompa - Kelebija border crossing, the Consulate General of Hungary in Subotica announced, according to Radio Television of Serbia (RTS).
The EES system will be introduced at the Reske-Horgos crossing from November 4th, and by November 11th at the remaining Hungarian crossings.
The system applies to countries outside the Schengen area. It is the start of work on a system that digitally records data on the entry and exit of "third-country" citizens, replacing the previous manual stamping of passports.
Registration points have been set up at border crossings and police officers will direct vehicles into special lanes for those who need to register, the Hungarian consulate said.
At the start of this system, "third-country" citizens coming from Serbia to Hungary will only have to register in the system for the first time, and after that, crossing the border will be much faster, the consulate announced.
The EES system has begun to be implemented at border crossings in Croatia, which recently entered the Schengen zone.
