French police wounded a man armed with a knife at Montparnasse train station in central Paris, the Paris prosecutor's office said.
The officer shot a 34-year-old man in the leg, after which he stabbed himself in the throat, the statement said, adding: "Emergency services quickly provided assistance."
A police source told Reuters that the man was in hospital, in critical condition.
A passerby was hit in the foot by one of the police shots, the prosecutor's office added in a statement.
A man brandished a knife at officers waiting for him at Montparnasse station as part of a domestic violence investigation being conducted by police in the southern suburbs of Paris.
A Reuters photographer at the station at the time of the incident said the incident caused panic among commuters and weekend travelers, just a day after France marked the 10th anniversary of the jihadist group's attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.
"The memory of the attacks on November 13 (2015) is still present," said witness Elvir Ves.
"I thought, 'Here he is again.' I suddenly felt a lot of stress."
