Powerful storms brought by Storm Claudia have killed three people and injured dozens in Portugal, authorities said on Saturday, while in Britain rescue workers have ordered evacuations due to severe flooding in Wales and England.
Portugal and parts of neighboring Spain have been dealing with extreme weather conditions for days brought by Storm Claudia, which reached parts of Britain and Ireland by Saturday.
Rescuers found the bodies of an elderly couple in their flooded home in the town of Fernão Ferro, Lisbon, on Thursday. They were reportedly asleep and failed to escape as the water rose overnight, Reuters reported.
On Saturday, emergency services said a tornado hit Albufeira in southern Portugal.
Remotely captured footage posted online shows the tornado damaging and destroying caravans at the campsite, where an 85-year-old British woman died, according to regional civil protection commander Vitor Vaz Pinto.
Twenty-eight people were injured at a nearby hotel, he said, adding that two people were being treated in hospital with serious injuries.
In a statement, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed "solidarity with the family of the victim who died" in Albufeira and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Portugal's IPMA meteorological service has placed an orange alert, the second highest level of warning, on the entire Algarve and the districts of Beja and Setubal.
In Britain, the town of Monmouth and surrounding areas in southeast Wales were severely flooded on Saturday.
The Fire and Rescue Service announced that it is conducting rescue operations, evacuations and checks on the situation on the ground.
"Storm Claudia caused significant flooding in parts of Wales overnight, which continues to affect homes, businesses, transport and energy infrastructure," a Welsh Government spokesman said.
Aerial footage, Reuters reports, shows widespread flooding in Monmouth, with water inundating the city center and residential neighborhoods after a nearby river overflowed its banks overnight.
The state agency (Netherlands Resources Wales) has issued 11 flood warnings, four of which are classified as serious, as well as 17 warnings of the possibility of flooding.
In England, according to the latest update from the Environment Agency, there are 49 active flood warnings and 134 flood warnings in force.
