The US remains "the EU's greatest ally", said European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kalas today, following the publication of the new US National Security Strategy, which points to the "erasure of civilization" of Europe due to its acceptance of migrants.
"The US remains our greatest ally. We have not always agreed on various issues, but I think the general principle remains the same: We are the greatest allies and we should remain united," Kaja Kalas told reporters at the Doha Political Forum in Qatar, responding to a question about US strategy, the French newspaper Liberation reported.
She said that there is a lot of criticism of Europe in the US strategy, but she believes that much of it is even justified.
The US administration on Friday released a National Security Strategy redefined in line with President Donald Trump's "America First" approach.
The document, which has been sharply criticized by Europeans, represents a historical turning point and supports the far-right's claims that the "Old Continent" is facing "civilizational erosion" due to immigration.
The US strategy proposes an end to NATO's "permanent expansion", thus once again destroying Ukraine's hopes as it fights off a Russian invasion.
Kaja Kalas admitted that "Europe has underestimated its own power when it comes to Russia, for example. We should have more confidence in ourselves."
The EU High Representative added that imposing restrictions on Ukraine will not bring lasting peace because "if aggression is rewarded, it will be repeated, not only in Ukraine or Gaza, but around the world."
Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton, in a harsher reaction, assessed today for the Parisian newspaper that with this strategy, Trump has joined Russian President Vladimir Putin in the goal of greatly weakening Europe, which is "becoming a vassal."
Breton, former European Commissioner (2019-2024) in charge of the internal market and industrial policy, called on European leaders to unite in opposing the American plan.
"According to that document, Europe will be unrecognizable in 20 years or less if current trends continue," Breton said, adding that the American strategy has similarities to Putin's.
The US National Security Strategy expresses doubts about the strength of certain European countries, both militarily and economically, to remain reliable allies of the US.
The document sharply criticizes certain European policies, including "migration policies that are transforming the continent and creating conflicts," "censorship of freedom of speech," "declining birth rates," and "the loss of national identities and self-confidence."
The strategy uses harsh language, assessing that Europe faces "the prospect of the erasure of its civilization" if current trends continue.
The Strategy lists "fostering resistance within European countries to Europe's current trajectory" as a key foreign policy goal, which analysts interpret as a form of interference designed to support far-right, anti-immigration political parties.
