American billionaire and owner of the X platform Elon Musk called today for the abolition of the European Union (EU) after a 120 million euro fine was imposed on his social network.
The European Commission believes that the social network has violated the rules of the European Digital Services Act.
"The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to countries so that governments can better represent their citizens," Musk wrote on X, which was once called Twitter.
He assessed that the EU imposed this unreasonable punishment not only on Iks, but also on him personally.
"I love Europe, but not the bureaucratic monster that is the EU," he added, comparing the European commissioners to the former East German secret police - the Stasi.
Musk wasn't the only one to react to X's punishment.
"The penalty imposed by the European Commission is not just an attack on X, but an attack on all American technology platforms and the American people," said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
As reported by French media, several European representatives and diplomats spoke in defense of the EU.
Hena Virkunen, the European Commission's vice-president in charge of digitalization, said the fine had nothing to do with the platform's censorship.
"We are not here to impose the highest penalties, but to ensure that our digital laws are respected," she said.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said that in Europe, transparency is mandatory for major platforms.
"The rule is the same for everyone. TikTok accepted it, X rejected it. The European Commission took action, and rightly so. And this is just the beginning," the French minister added.
