The European Union (EU) has condemned the threat of American interference in the political life of Europe, after the United States (US) published its national security strategy last week, French media reported.
The US administration on Friday released a National Security Strategy redefined in line with President Donald Trump's "America First" approach.
"What we cannot accept is the threat of interference in the political life of Europe," said European Council President Antonio Costa in a speech at the Jacques Delors Institute today.
The US cannot replace European citizens in choosing which "parties are good and which are bad. We have differences in our view of the world, but this goes beyond that," Košta stressed, adding that the US strategy still calls Europe an ally.
"That strategy still calls Europe an ally. That's good, but if we are allies, then we need to act as allies and respect each other's sovereignty," said the European Council President.
According to him, the US remains an important ally, an important economic partner, but Europe needs to be sovereign.
The US administration on Friday released a National Security Strategy redefined in line with President Donald Trump's "America First" approach.
The document, which sharply criticizes Europeans, represents a historical turning point and supports the claims of the far right that the "old continent" is facing "civilizational erosion" due to immigration.
Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton, in a harsher reaction, assessed on Saturday for the Parisian newspaper Le Parisien that with this strategy, Trump joined Russian President Vladimir Putin in the goal of greatly weakening Europe.
