If the security of the electoral process is guaranteed while the country is at war, elections could be held within 60 to 90 days, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said tonight.
Zelensky was reacting to an interview by US President Donald Trump, who said that Zelensky should hold presidential elections.
"I think it's important to have elections. They're using the war as an excuse not to have elections. Maybe Zelensky would win. I don't know who would win. But they haven't had elections in a long time. You know, they talk about democracy, but at some point, it's not a real democracy anymore," Trump said.
He criticized the Ukrainian president for not studying the latest peace proposals. "He should read them. His team loved the proposal. They really loved it," Trump added.
Zelensky told reporters that he would ask lawmakers to prepare "proposals on the possibility of amending the legislative framework and the law on elections under martial law," the Paris newspaper Le Monde reported.
The Ukrainian president added that he will probably present an updated peace plan for resolving the conflict to the US administration as early as tomorrow.
