Nine newborns died in a maternity hospital in the city of Novokuznetsk, in Russia's Kemerovo region, during the New Year holidays, regional health minister Andrei Tarasov confirmed.
"The situation really happened. The circumstances of the incident are currently being investigated. A commission from the Ministry of Health is on the ground to assess the situation and ensure that something like this does not happen again. Official information will be announced upon completion of the investigation," Tarasov said.
Earlier, it was reported that at least six babies had died in one of two maternity hospitals in Novokuznetsk. Today, the healthcare facility announced that it was temporarily closing due to the local epidemiological situation and an increase in the number of respiratory infections, TASS reports.
