Ukraine's parliament appointed Mykhailo Fedorov as its new defense minister on Tuesday, vowing to push for innovation and reform to strengthen the military in the war with Russia.

The new minister, 34-year-old Fedorov, previously served as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Digital Transformation, Reuters reports.

Fedorov played an important role in shaping Ukraine's high-tech response to Russian attacks, and in particular helped improve the connectivity of the Ukrainian military by deploying Starlink terminals.

He also distinguished himself in creating the so-called drone line, a defensive formation designed to harm Russia.

"Today it is impossible to fight new technologies using the old organizational structure. We need comprehensive changes," Fedorov said during the presentation of the action plan to deputies before the vote.

He said his goal is to reform the military, improve infrastructure at the front, "to eradicate lies and corruption and create leadership and trust as a new culture."

Fedorov said his reforms would focus on digitizing the military, increasing the use of drones and artificial intelligence, and making wider use of technology.

"More robots, less losses. More technology, fewer casualties," he said.
