Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in an interview published today that a US invasion of Greenland would "make Putin the happiest man in the world."
Sanchez warned that any military action by the United States against the vast Danish Arctic island would seriously harm NATO and legitimize Russian aggression in Ukraine.
"If we focus on Greenland, I have to say that a US invasion of that territory would make Vladimir Putin the happiest man in the world. Why? Because it would legitimize his attempted invasion of Ukraine," he said in an interview with the newspaper La Vanguardia.
"If the United States were to use force, it would be a death sentence for NATO. Putin would be doubly happy," Sanchez added, according to Hina.
US President Donald Trump appeared to harden his stance on Greenland yesterday, threatening to increase tariffs on European allies until the United States is allowed to purchase the territory.
Trump, in a post on his Truth Social network, said that additional tariffs of 10 percent would take effect on February 1 on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the United Kingdom. According to him, the tariffs would increase to 25 percent on June 1 and remain in effect until an agreement is reached on the US purchase of Greenland.
Trump has repeatedly stressed that he will not settle for anything less than ownership of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. The leaders of Denmark and Greenland have said that Greenland is not for sale and does not want to become part of the United States.
