United States President Donald Trump said yesterday that Denmark had not been able to do anything to remove the "Russian threat" from Greenland, saying: "Now is the time, and it will be done!!!", Reuters reports today.
"NATO has been telling Denmark for 20 years that it 'must remove the Russian threat from Greenland.' Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it," Trump wrote in a post on the social network Truth Social, which he owns.
The White House and the Danish Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
Trump has repeatedly insisted that he will not agree to anything less than ownership of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
The leaders of both Denmark and Greenland have said that the island is not for sale and does not want to be part of the United States.
Trump threatened on Saturday to impose a wave of increasingly tough tariffs on European allies until the US is allowed to buy Greenland.
The growing presence of China and Russia makes Greenland crucial to US security interests, Trump said.
Danish and other European officials pointed out, however, that Greenland is already covered by a NATO collective security agreement.
