Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has announced his resignation.
"Today, for the last time, I am addressing you as president. Tomorrow I will submit my resignation," Radev announced.
Although he did not explicitly say so, what everyone expected and what has been talked about for almost two years is that he will run in the snap elections with his own long-announced political project.
Radev, reports Kapital.bg, spoke about the "captured state" and the urgent fight against corruption.
"The popular wave has given rise to a broad social consensus against the mafia, which should be materialized in the upcoming elections. Today's political class has betrayed Bulgarians through compromises with the oligarchy. Two-thirds of the people are not voting and a new social contract is needed... Your trust obliges me to protect statehood, institutions and our future," Radev said.
His term will be completed by Vice President Ilijana Jotova.
