A drone attack caused a fire at an oil depot in the western Russian city of Penza early this morning, regional governor Oleg Melnichenko said on Telegram, adding that there were no reports of casualties.
Authorities did not provide details about the origin of the drones, but the Russian Defense Ministry said air defenses had intercepted at least 12 Ukrainian drones overnight, including one over the Penza region.
Videos circulating on social media show a column of flames rising from the site of an oil depot, located in the eastern suburbs of Penza, 618 kilometers from the front line.
Ukraine has not yet commented. Relatively cheap Ukrainian drones caused $1 billion in damage to Russian oil and gas facilities, the French newspaper Le Monde reported on its website.
Kiev claims the strikes are a legitimate response to Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy system in a war that has lasted nearly four years.
Russian bombing of Ukraine's energy grid in recent weeks has left thousands of people without heat and electricity, while temperatures are below freezing.
