Russia launched another major attack on Ukraine's power grid early this morning, including an attack on Kiev, leaving 1,2 million people across the country without power.
Around 6.000 buildings in Kiev have been without heating since this morning, while the temperature was around minus ten degrees Celsius, and many have not had heating since previous attacks, the British agency Reuters reported.
Moscow is attacking even though it has been negotiating a peace plan with the United States (US) and Ukraine for two days in the United Arab Emirates, with no signs of compromise so far.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said one person was killed in the capital and four were wounded, three of whom were hospitalized, while 19 people, including a child, were injured in Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv.
Russia, which has been bombing Ukraine's power grid since the beginning of its invasion in 2022, is conducting its most intense campaign of bombing energy infrastructure this winter, leaving residents across Ukraine with at most a few hours of electricity a day and some without heating and water.
More than 800.000 households in Kyiv and another 400.000 in the northern Chernihiv region are without power due to the latest attacks, Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia attacked last night with 375 drones and 21 missiles, including two rarely used Zircon ballistic missiles.
Ukrainian air defenses opened fire on missiles and drones targeting Kiev, and loud detonations were heard among the city's high-rise buildings.
The head of the Kiev military administration, Timur Tkachenko, said there had been attacks in at least four districts. A medical facility was also damaged.
Kiev has already suffered two massive nighttime attacks since New Year's, leaving hundreds of apartment buildings without electricity and heating.
Emergency crews are still working on repairs.
In Kharkiv, a frequent target of attacks just 29 kilometers from the Russian border and much closer to the eastern front lines, Mayor Igor Terekhov said 25 drones had hit several neighborhoods.
Terekhov stated on Telegram that the drones hit a student dormitory housing displaced persons, as well as a maternity hospital and another healthcare facility.
