French President Emmanuel Macron promised today that the government would launch an "accelerated procedure" to ensure that parliament quickly passes a law banning social media for under-15s and that it can come into effect next school year.
"I have asked the government to launch an accelerated procedure so that it can pass through the Senate. Because what I want to do, the commitment I made in one of my debates, is to apply the ban next school year," Macron said in a video message broadcast by France's BFMTV.
The accelerated procedure for parliamentary consideration of a law enables, according to the Constitution, its rapid implementation.
"We are banning social media for under-15s and we will ban mobile phones in our secondary schools. I believe this is a clear rule, clear for our teenagers, clear for families, clear for teachers, and we are moving forward," Macron added.
The French president said that "the brains of children and teenagers are not for sale."
"The emotions of our children and teenagers are not for sale or manipulation, neither by American platforms nor by Chinese algorithms," added Macron, who wore unusual sunglasses for him in the video (the Aviator model), for which he was recently mocked by US President Donald Trump.
