German police have arrested a member of the Hamas terrorist organization at Berlin airport, suspected of preparing attacks on Jewish sites in Germany, the Karlsruhe state prosecutor's office announced on Saturday.
"The state prosecutor's office ordered the arrest of 36-year-old Muhammad S. on Friday evening after his return from Beirut. He is accused of membership in the terrorist organization Hamas and of preparing terrorist attacks on Jewish facilities in Germany," the Karlsruhe Chief State Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.
As it is further stated, in August, Muhamad S., in agreement with another Hamas member who had already been arrested, arranged attacks on Jewish facilities and for that purpose acquired 300 rounds of live ammunition.
Last year, police arrested several members of the same group, including in London, on charges that they were preparing attacks on Jewish facilities in Germany and Europe.
In Germany, since the Hamas attack on Israel in 2023 and the subsequent Gaza war, there has been an increase in attacks on members of the Jewish community.
The situation is particularly tense in Berlin, where a large number of Arab Palestinians live. According to the Organization for Combating Anti-Semitism, seven attacks with an anti-Semitic background are recorded in Berlin every day.
