Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) announced today that a man suspected of shooting senior Russian military intelligence officer Vladimir Alekseev in Moscow has been detained in Dubai and extradited to Russia.
Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev, deputy head of the GRU, Russia's military intelligence service, was shot multiple times in Moscow on Friday, investigators said. He underwent surgery after the shooting, Russian media reported.
The FSB announced that a Russian citizen named Lyubomir Korba was detained in Dubai on suspicion of shooting.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Ukraine of being behind the assassination attempt, which he said was aimed at sabotaging peace talks. Ukraine has said it had nothing to do with the shooting.
Alekseyev's superior, Admiral Igor Kostyukov, head of the GRU, is leading the Russian delegation in talks with Ukraine in Abu Dhabi on the security aspects of a potential peace agreement.
The Russian newspaper Kommersant reported yesterday that two people suspected of the attempted assassination of Alekseyev "will soon be questioned."
