Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the demonstrations in Milan and the alleged sabotage of a railway in northern Italy, calling those responsible "enemies of Italy and Italians."
"They protest 'against the Olympics', and those images end up on various televisions around the world. Then some others cut the cables on the tracks to prevent the trains from leaving," said Meloni, adding that thousands of Italians, many of whom are volunteers, are working to make the Olympics go as smoothly as possible.
The Italian transport ministry said it had launched a terrorism investigation into yesterday's "synchronised sabotage of a railway line" in northern Italy.
In Milan, police fired tear gas and used a water cannon at protesters yesterday after a group of demonstrators threw firecrackers and tried to get onto the highway near the Olympic Village.
The demonstrators were protesting pollution caused by the Winter Olympics being held in Cortina near Milan, as well as the presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, who have killed two people during demonstrations in Minneapolis, USA, since the beginning of the year — incidents that have sparked widespread protests and condemnation across the country.
