NATO should be based more on partnership than on dependence, said today US Deputy Secretary of War Elbridge Colby, who is participating in a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.
Elbridge said NATO is a serious alliance focused on defense and deterrence and that 2025 could see a "reshaping and a real commitment" to efforts to "have Europe leading the conventional defense" of NATO.
"Now is the time to be pragmatic. I think we have a really strong basis to work together in partnership," Colby said before the meeting began.
He emphasized that NATO should be based on partnership, not dependence, and return to what the Alliance was originally intended for.
Colby came to today's meeting at NATO headquarters from the United States instead of US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegsett, which is the second ministerial meeting of the Alliance to which Washington did not send its ministers.
