Due to a strike by two unions of pilots and flight attendants, Germany's largest airline, Lufthansa, had to cancel a large number of flights today.
The Vereinigung Cockpit pilots and flight engineers association has called for a one-day strike on flights departing from Germany, amid a dispute over the pension system for pilots at the airline and its Lufthansa Cargo unit.
It was joined by the Independent Organization of Flight Attendants UFO, which is seeking talks with management over a number of issues, and called on its members to stop work on flights departing from Frankfurt and Munich, as well as on flights operated by the Lufthansa Cityline unit.
Lufthansa said that a large number of flights were canceled due to the strike, but did not provide a precise number.
Data from the airline's main hub in Frankfurt shows that most flights from there were canceled this morning.
Lufthansa says it is trying to transfer passengers to flights of partner airlines and other companies in the Lufthansa group.
The German airline described the strikes as disproportionate, and said it expected most flights to return to normal on Friday.
