More than two-thirds of Europeans believe that their country is under threat in the current international situation, according to the results of a new Eurobarometer survey released today, as the Munich Security Conference begins.
The European Commission's research also showed that the majority of respondents would trust the EU to strengthen defense and that they consider investments in this field important.
Respondents across the EU also see the Union's space programs as key instruments for defense and security, environment and climate issues, and competitiveness.
The results show that 68 percent of EU citizens believe that their country is under threat, with 80 percent in France and more than 70 percent each in the Netherlands, Denmark, Cyprus and Germany.
42 percent of those surveyed in the EU believe that their personal security is at risk, the European Commission announced.
At the same time, the majority (52 percent) believe that the EU will strengthen security and defense, and in Luxembourg, Portugal, Cyprus and Lithuania, the figure is more than 70 percent.
Also, three-quarters of those surveyed approve of the current level of EU investment in defense or believe that this spending should be higher, with the highest number of those who think so being in Lithuania, Portugal, Finland, and Spain.
53% of Europeans see defense and security as a key priority of EU space policy, 36% see the environment and climate, and 31% see the competitiveness and growth of European industry.
The survey included more than 27.000 respondents from 27 EU member states.
