A Slovak national, who had been on the run for 16 years, was arrested when he showed up in Milan to support his national ice hockey team at the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, police said today.
The 44-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was wanted by Italian authorities for a series of thefts committed in 2010.
Carabinieri were able to track down and arrest the man on Wednesday after he checked into accommodation on the outskirts of Milan. He was then taken to a Milan prison to serve a sentence of 11 months and seven days, police said.
This Slovak ended up not being able to watch the game in which the Slovak hockey players convincingly defeated Finland 4:1 on Wednesday.
