On the second anniversary of the death of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, his mother Lyudmila Navalny has called for justice for her son.
Referring to an investigation by five European countries that concluded that the opposition leader was poisoned with a rare toxin, she said that the investigation confirms what was known from the beginning.
"We knew that our son didn't just die in prison. He was murdered," she told reporters gathered near his grave in Moscow.
"Two years have passed, and we now know what poisoned him. I think it will take time and we will eventually find out who did it," she added.
Several dozen people gathered in Moscow today at the grave of Navalny, a major opponent of the Kremlin, who died in prison on February 16, 2024, at the age of 47.
The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands announced two days ago that Navalny was poisoned in a penal colony two years ago.
The five governments said in a joint statement that their conclusion was based on analyses of samples from Navalny's body, which they said clearly confirmed the presence of epibatidine, a toxin obtained from poisonous frogs living in South America.
Navalny died in an Arctic penal colony in February 2024, and his team and his wife, Yulia Navalny, accuse President Vladimir Putin of ordering the murder.
