Cyprus has postponed a meeting of European Union (EU) ministers scheduled for today due to a drone attack that hit a British air base on the island overnight, a spokesman said, Reuters reported.
Cyprus currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU.
"Given this unforeseen development, which unfortunately affected today's flights to Cyprus, the Cypriot presidency has decided to postpone the informal GAC (General Affairs Council) to a later date," the spokesman said.
A drone struck the British Royal Air Force (RAF) base in Akrotiri in Cyprus overnight, causing limited damage and no casualties, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and the British Ministry of Defense announced today, Reuters reports.
The British newspaper The Guardian reported that Cyprus has put the relevant services on alert, closed schools and, where necessary, evacuated people, after being drawn into the wider conflict in the Middle East following a drone attack on a British base on the island.
In an early morning address to the nation, President Nikos Christodoulides said that the security of his country is the government's most important concern.
"We are in a region of particular geopolitical instability, with many challenges and problems, which is currently going through an unprecedented crisis. We are doing what needs to be done, with the security of our country and our citizens being our main concern," said Christodoulidis.
